From Training to Employment: Civil Construction Pathways in Ceduna

At EyrePlus, we work closely with local industry and community partners across the Far West of South Australia to build pathways that reflect what our communities actually need. In Ceduna, that’s meant a direct line into the region’s civil construction, mining and infrastructure sectors, and six local participants have just come through it with qualifications and jobs to show for it.

Through funding provided under the Australian Government’s Community Projects Program, six participants from Ceduna completed the Civil Construction Skills Set training, delivered by TAFE SA. The program was built around the needs of local industry, equipping participants with nationally recognised qualifications and practical skills aligned to the mining, civil construction and infrastructure sectors. Tickets and units completed included White Card, Working at Heights, Confined Spaces, Front End Loader operations and workplace communication, all directly relevant to the roles participants would go on to secure. For people living in Far West communities, these qualifications are hard to come by without leaving the region.

A direct line to employment

Throughout the program, participants’ training extended beyond the classroom, as they were connected to employers with real roles on offer in the region. That groundwork paid off. All six participants completed pre-employment medical assessments following the program. Three commenced with Lucas Total Contract Solutions in May 2026, and a further three are due to commence with Iluka Resources pending final dates.

Built on strong local partnerships

We partnered with TAFE SA, Far West Coast Aboriginal Corporation (FWCAC), Iluka Resources and Lucas Total Contract Solutions, who each played a role in this outcome, from program design and funding through to employer engagement and placement. By directing Community Projects funding into training aligned to actual job opportunities in the region, the partnership helped six local people gain qualifications and move into meaningful civil construction and mining careers with long-term prospects in the Far West.

Strong partnerships between community organisations, training providers and employers are what make employment pathways like this possible. When everyone is working toward the same goal and participants are given the right support and connections, the results speak for themselves.
